At least 60% average in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and at least 50% in English in Class 10 or 12.

The Indian Maritime University entrance test, or the written test, psychometric test and interview of a shipping company that sponsors cadets.

Pass the medical
A medical examination by a DG Shipping-approved doctor, including eyesight, colour vision and hearing.

What is the IMU CET exam pattern?
The IMU CET for undergraduate maritime courses is an online, computer-based test of 200 multiple-choice questions in 3 hours, covering English, General Knowledge & Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level. 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.
When is the IMU CET 2027 exam?
IMU has not announced the 2027 dates yet. The exam is usually held once a year in May — IMU CET 2026 was held on 24 May 2026 with applications open from February to April. Starting preparation now gives you about six months before the expected exam.
Can girls join the Merchant Navy?
Yes. Women can join as deck officers, marine engineers and electro-technical officers. IMU also allows a higher upper age limit for women (27 years for the General category in the 2026 cycle).
Is the Merchant Navy the same as the Indian Navy?
