There is a particular kind of student who writes JEE Main, does reasonably well, and still feels a pull towards uniform rather than a regular engineering campus. If that is you, the Indian Army’s 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES) may be the most underrated door you have not looked at closely enough.
TES has no written exam of its own. Your JEE Main score gets you shortlisted, the SSB decides whether you are selected, and the Army then trains you as an engineer and an officer at the same time. This guide explains TES-57, the course starting in July 2027, as clearly as we can.
One honest note before you read on. The official TES-57 notification sits on joinindianarmy.nic.in, which we could not open directly while writing (the site requires a CAPTCHA). The TES-57 figures below are as reported by defence news coverage of the notification in October 2026. Please confirm each one on the official site before you apply.

If the reported deadline is right, applications close at noon on 12 November 2026. Do not leave it to the last morning. Government portals slow down badly near deadlines.
Who Can Apply
- Class 12 with PCM: at least 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. As reported, the PCM percentage is calculated from Class 12 marks only, and must be entered to two decimal places without rounding.
- JEE (Mains) 2026: you must have appeared in it. The application reportedly asks for your JEE Mains 2026 application number.
- Unmarried men only: TES is currently open only to unmarried male candidates, who must not marry until training is complete.
- Date of birth: only the date on your Class 10 certificate is accepted.
If you are a girl interested in an officer career straight after Class 12, NDA is open to you. Our guide to the NDA 1 2027 age limit and dates has the details.
How Shortlisting Works: JEE Main, Not a New Exam
This is the part most students misunderstand. TES does not hold its own written test. As reported for TES-57:
- Shortlisting is based on the JEE (Mains) Common Rank List and other parameters.
- A shortlisting cut-off is expected around the fourth week of November 2026, and the Army can fix it at its discretion.
- Only shortlisted candidates get an SSB call.
In other words, your JEE Main score opens the door, but it does not take you through it. After shortlisting, every candidate stands on the same line at the SSB, whatever their rank.
The SSB: Where TES Is Actually Decided
The SSB is the same five-day, two-stage process used for other officer entries. Stage 1 is the screening (the OIR test and PP&DT). Candidates who clear it go on to psychology tests, GTO tasks, the personal interview and the conference. For TES-57, the SSBs are reported to be held between February and March 2027, at selection centres in Prayagraj, Bhopal, Bengaluru and Jalandhar.
Many TES candidates are strong in Physics and Maths but have never spoken in a group discussion or written a story about a hazy picture in four minutes. That is worth fixing early. Start with our guide to SSB Stage 1 screening (OIR and PP&DT), then work through the psychology tests.
Training: Four Years, Engineer and Officer
As reported for TES-57, training runs for four years in two phases:
- Phase 1 (three years): at one of three Cadets Training Wings: CME Pune (Civil and Mechanical Engineering), MCTE Mhow (Telecom and IT) or MCEME Secunderabad (Electronics and Mechanical Engineering).
- Phase 2 (one year): at the Indian Military Academy, here in Dehradun.
- At the end: an engineering degree and a Permanent Commission as a Lieutenant, mainly in the Corps of Engineers, Signals and EME.
- Stipend: reported at ₹56,100 per month, paid during the final year at IMA.
If you live in Dehradun, you have probably seen the IMA gates on the Chakrata Road side of the city. For TES cadets, that is where the last year of the journey happens.
TES vs NDA: Which Should You Choose?
| Point | Army TES | NDA |
|---|---|---|
| Written exam | None (JEE Main based shortlisting) | UPSC written exam (Maths and GAT) |
| Stream | PCM with 60% needed | Any stream for Army wing, PCM for Navy and Air Force |
| Who can apply | Unmarried men | Unmarried men and women |
| Service | Army (technical arms mainly) | Army, Navy or Air Force |
| Selection | 5-day SSB and medical | 5-day SSB and medical |
Many serious aspirants apply for both, because the SSB experience from one helps in the other. If you are eligible for NDA (I) 2027 as well, its notification is due on 2 December 2026, a few weeks after TES-57 applications close. The Navy runs its own version for PCM students too: see our Navy 10+2 B.Tech entry coaching page.
How NDDA Can Help
For TES, the written stage is your JEE Main, so the SSB is where preparation makes the biggest difference. Noval Doon Defence Academy in Dehradun runs SSB preparation covering screening, psychology tests, GTO tasks and the interview. See our SSB coaching in Dehradun page, or contact us to ask about the next batch.
