morning of the last day at the SSB, most candidates are tired in a way that is hard to describe. You have sat the screening tests, written stories and sentences against a clock, run the GTO tasks, sat across from the interviewing officer, and spent four nights wondering how it is all going. And then there is one more room to walk into: the conference.<\/p><p>For many candidates, the conference feels like the moment of judgement. In a sense it is. But it is also the least understood part of the SSB, and a lot of the fear around it comes from rumours. This guide explains what the official rules say, what usually happens in the room, and how to carry yourself through it. With SSB interviews for NDA (II) and CDS (II) 2026 likely from December 2026 to January 2027, it is worth understanding now, not on the night before.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7c19bbc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7c19bbc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the Official Rules Say<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93fcbae elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"93fcbae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The clearest official description of how the SSB marks you is printed in the UPSC notification itself. The NDA (II) 2026 notification (dated 20 May 2026), in its section on the Intelligence and Personality Test, says:<\/p><ul><li>Stage II of the SSB covers the <strong>Interview, Group Testing Officer tasks, Psychology tests and the Conference<\/strong>, conducted over four days.<\/li><li>Your personality is assessed by <strong>three different assessors<\/strong>: the Interviewing Officer (IO), the Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist.<\/li><li>There is <strong>no separate weightage for each test<\/strong>. Assessors allot marks only after considering your performance holistically across all the tests.<\/li><li>Marks for the <strong>Conference<\/strong> are allotted based on your initial performance in the three techniques and the decision of the Board.<\/li><li>All of these have <strong>equal weightage<\/strong>.<\/li><li>The tests are designed to bring out the presence or absence of <strong>Officer Like Qualities<\/strong> and their trainability, and candidates are then Recommended or Not Recommended.<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"nd-callout nd-note\"><p>Read the fourth point slowly. The conference is not a fresh exam where you start from zero. The details can vary between boards:<\/p><ul><li>Candidates are usually called in one by one, often in chest-number order, in formal dress.<\/li><li>You sit facing the members of the Board, which typically includes the President, the IO, the GTO and the psychologist, among others.<\/li><li>The conversation is short, often just a few minutes. You may be asked how your stay was, how you felt about the tasks, whether you want to say anything, or a question or two to clear a doubt the assessors still have.<\/li><li>Later the same day, the results are announced, and recommended candidates usually stay on for the medical examination.<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"nd-callout \"><p>Some candidates get a long conversation, others a quick &#8220;thank you, you may go&#8221;. Neither tells you anything about the result. By the time you walk in, the IO, the GTO and the psychologist have each formed a view over four days. The conference is where those views are discussed and, where the assessors differ, where the Board looks more closely at you.<\/p><p>What you can do in the conference is avoid creating a doubt that was not there before. That means:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Be the same person you were all week.<\/strong> If you were calm and open in the interview, do not suddenly turn rehearsed and formal.<\/li><li><strong>Answer honestly.<\/strong> If they ask how a task went and it went badly, say so plainly and say what you learned. Most candidates who go to an SSB are not recommended. That is the nature of a selection system built to pick a small number of officers from a very large number of applicants. In CDS (I) 2026, for example, 2,601 candidates qualified the written test for IMA and 155 made the final merit list, according to UPSC. Many candidates are recommended only on a later attempt, after learning from an earlier one.<\/p><p>If it happens to you, give yourself a day to feel it. Then sit down and write, honestly, what you think went well and what did not, task by task, while it is fresh. That page will be worth more to you than any coaching note.
